Each seamstress has their own preferences and there are many varieties for each utensil. The experts already have their basic sewing and have done little things and use some more than others.
devote entire books could be talking about each sewing tool but perhaps that we leave it for another day ...
For now here I've thought for those who start sewing today and includes only the basics.
1. sewing machine. The simplest is sufficient for this pattern. Mine is a stitch that just makes Alfa normal and zigzag, and now I have no plans to change it.
2. Iron . Fundamental. More than the machine because you can even dress sewing by hand, but the iron is needed to establish the seams, making the bias tape and shape the dress.
3. Scissors . I used for my first sewing scissors cut paper. Are the absolute minimum scissors to cut fabric, paper and thread, but it is recommended to take one for anything, because the fabric must be very accurate and they are used to cut paper, even once, is dull and ruin the fabric.
4. Tape. With it will measure the small, so it must be flexible but not stretch. As I sew a lot with American employers, mine has inches on one side and inches in another.
5. Rule (or measuring stick, as my friend calls it). Useful to change the pattern, hems, etc, though you may use only the tape.
6. Hilo. My mother gave me my sewing machine with the caveat that flossing always good, and the same brand and type in the bobbin and the coil. As good rebellious daughter took me a nanosecond to delete this from my mind and placed a string of Ikea. Tensions bugged me and my mother had to come to the rescue. Since then "put God to witness that would only use Gutermann thread"
7. Sewing Needles hand. Necessary to baste or to finish some sewing. A box of needles of various sizes is always a good investment. The thimble protects the finger when pushing the needle but for some people uncomfortable.
8. seam ripper. Or sewing seam ripper. Is life at some point the seams go regularly and have to rip and start over. The probability of this happening increases if you have kids around trying to draw the attention of their moms, so there is that facilitated the bitter task of having to undo something with such a gadget.
9. tailor's chalk. Or a special pen to mark the fabric. The pencil is more accurate but the soap looks better. Seek a dark color for light fabrics and light for darkness. I use the blue 99% of the time.
10. Pins . To hold the paper pattern to the fabric before cutting and to turn the pieces before sewing. I prefer those with round heads and colors because I lose less.
11. Tomatito with strawberry.
